PROVIDENCE, RI – With several large community events taking place across the city on Sunday, July 19, the Providence Police Department deployed personnel throughout Providence to ensure residents and visitors could safely enjoy the day. Officers responded to incidents as they occurred, resulting in multiple arrests, four illegal firearms seized, and a coordinated response that helped restore normal activity in affected areas.
Throughout the day and evening, officers from Patrol, the Neighborhood Response Team (NRT), Community Response Team (CRT), detectives, and specialty units were strategically deployed throughout the city to support public safety at planned events and respond to calls for service. Their visible presence allowed officers to quickly address incidents, remove illegal firearms from the streets, and prevent situations from escalating.
The department’s public safety efforts resulted in the seizure of four illegal firearms, multiple arrests for firearm offenses, disorderly conduct, assault, resisting arrest, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and other criminal violations.
Additionally, officers responded to several community assistance calls, including helping a four-year-old child found alone on Broad Street. The child was transported for medical evaluation and safely placed into the care of the appropriate child welfare authorities. Earlier in the day, officers coordinated with the Providence Fire Department after a woman went into labor near the department’s Mobile Command Unit in India Point Park and was transported safely to the hospital.
By approximately 11:30PM, officers had successfully dispersed large crowds in the Broad Street corridor, allowing the area to return to normal activity. The day’s enforcement efforts included:
- Four illegal firearms seized.
- More than 50 large-group dispersals in and around Roger Williams Park and 22 dispersals along the Broad Street corridor.
- Multiple arrests for firearm offenses, disorderly conduct, assault, resisting arrest, and other criminal violations.
- Recovery of a stolen motor vehicle.
- Seizure of an illegally operated ATV.
- Arrest on a bench warrant.
- 37 motor vehicle stops.
- 23 criminal summonses resulting in 31 violations.
- 56 parking summonses issued.
- 17 loud music violations addressed.
- Five vehicles towed.
- Dispersal of unauthorized food vendors and unlawful gatherings.
Throughout several incidents, officers exercised professionalism and restraint while safely managing large crowds, intervening in fights, and preventing situations from escalating further.
“Our goal is simple: to ensure people can safely enjoy everything Providence has to offer,” said Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez. “On a day when thousands of people gathered across our city, our officers were where they needed to be — engaging with the community, responding quickly to incidents, and taking decisive action when criminal activity occurred. Their professionalism and teamwork led to illegal firearms being removed from our streets, individuals being held accountable, and residents and visitors able to continue enjoying their day safely.”
